Set inside Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai on the Suzhou Creek side of Jing'an, Bvlgari Bar is a waterfront lounge with a wide, unobstructed view over the Huangpu toward the Bund. The menu leans Italian, with wood-fired pizzas and house gelato alongside the cocktail list, and the terrace at dusk is the moment to aim for: sunset sliding into the Bund's night skyline across the water. Expect hotel-bar pricing, around 380 to 550 RMB a head, and a crowd dressed for the setting. A dependable pick for a riverside evening that feels like an occasion.

Calypso is Jing'an Shangri-La's Italian restaurant, set in its own freestanding glasshouse on the Kerry Centre plaza rather than inside the hotel tower, with full-wall retractable glass and a terrace that keep indoor-outdoor seating comfortable year-round. The kitchen, led by a seasoned Italian executive chef, turns out hand-rolled fresh pasta and wood-fired Neapolitan pizza. I have joined friends here for a chef-customized weekday lunch set, and every dish felt refined and thoughtfully balanced. Elegant without being stiff, it suits date nights, small gatherings, and a relaxed premium meal at around 200 to 300 RMB a head.

Fifty-eight floors up at the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong, FLAIR is the rooftop where Lujiazui shows off: the open-air terrace looks almost straight across at the Oriental Pearl Tower, close enough that the lights color your table. Dinner runs nightly from 5:30pm, with terrace dinner packages from 1,680 RMB for two and cocktails around 200 RMB. Book a terrace table ahead, especially in the warm months, and time it for sunset so you get the skyline in both lights. Dress up a little; the room expects it.

Newly minted Michelin one-star (2026) from three young chefs who trained across Ningbo, Foshan, and Shanghai. The eclectic tasting menu, 1,280 RMB, shifts with the season and draws on all three chefs' hometown ingredients and techniques. The room is an intimate third-floor space at 720 Weihai Road, easy to reach from West Nanjing Road, and small enough that booking ahead is the only way in for weekends.

A dry-aged Korean BBQ project from Chef Tom Ryu of the modern Korean restaurant NABI, working with Master Choi, a specialist in dry-aging. The upstairs dining room does premium charcoal grilling with tableside service, using cuts like Qingdao wagyu and Zhejiang black pork, while the ground floor holds a bar and waiting area. It opened to instant demand, so book ahead; walk-ins are easier after 9pm.

Chef Ferran Edo Andreu has moved into the former Commune Social space on Jiangning Lu with a seafood-first Spanish menu, and the terrace brunch, now running Friday through Sunday, has become the summer booking everyone in Jing'an is chasing. Brunch sets run 268 to 398 RMB; dinner is a la carte with mains up to about 288 RMB, and most people land around 259 RMB a head. Come for the seafood rice, stay on the terrace until the plane trees go gold. Book ahead for weekends.

Hugely popular Thai kitchen in the West Bund Dream Center, a short walk from the riverside. The menu runs through the classics with a properly punchy hand: expect real heat and real sourness rather than toned-down versions. At around 169 RMB a head, it is one of the better-value Thai meals in this corner of Xuhui. No reservations, so a queue builds at peak hours; go early or put your name down and wander the West Bund while you wait.

Le Bec has left its Changning villa and reopened inside the restored Bund City Hall, a neoclassical 1914 building a block from the Bund. The new multi-floor setup runs an all-day bistro and cafe on the ground floor, a more refined French restaurant upstairs, wine and event spaces above, and a cellar for imported French wines below. It is a grand, all-day way to eat French near the river, from a morning pastry to a proper dinner.

Johnny Pham cooked at Taian Table before opening his own room in the century-old Far Eastern Hotel near People's Square, and in the 2026 Michelin guide it earned a star of its own. The French chef of Vietnamese descent runs a single seasonal tasting menu (1,888 RMB plus 10 percent) that moves between French technique and Vietnamese memory: think bouillabaisse with fish maw, pigeon with huangjiu. A special-occasion room with a story, and worth booking well ahead.

Bar Pesce is a seafood bar and bistro along Suzhou Creek in Jing'an, in the former Sage space beside Cometa. The kitchen leans Italian, with oysters, crudo and polished small plates matched to wine, and the low-key riverside room is built for lingering over one more glass. It is a recent opening still finding its rhythm, and an easy one to catch before word gets around.

Godly, known in Chinese as Gongdelin, is a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant on Nanjing West Road in Huangpu, and it has been serving plant-based Shanghainese and Huaiyang cooking since 1922. The kitchen works in the old temple-cuisine tradition, turning wheat gluten, tofu skin and mushrooms into versions of duck, ham and fish that arrive looking like the thing they are imitating. Everything on the menu is meat-free, which makes ordering unusually low-stress if you are vegetarian and tired of interrogating waiters. Come for the mock duck and the vegetarian goose, and note the split service hours: the kitchen closes mid-afternoon and again after nine.

The Dome is a modern Japanese omakase restaurant and rooftop lounge on the Bund in Huangpu, spread across two floors of 1 Yan'an Dong Lu with skyline views over the river. From the team behind The Fellas and Captain Bar, it runs a nightly omakase alongside sushi, sashimi and grilled plates, with cocktails and sake. Upstairs the Skyline Dome terrace becomes a late-night lounge with DJs, so it works for a quiet counter dinner or a night that keeps going.

Andaz Shanghai ITC opened in February 2026 inside the ITC complex in Xujiahui, Xuhui. It holds 267 rooms and suites, many with floor-to-ceiling windows and a few with terraces, and the interiors nod to the district's layered history. As an Andaz, it leans lifestyle rather than formal, with dining and lounge spaces that pull in locals as much as house guests. The Xujiahui setting puts a metro stop, shopping, and plenty of food within a short walk. Early reviews single out the service and the design. Rates sit at the higher end, in line with a new luxury opening.

The newer of Shanghai's two Waldorfs sits on the New Bund riverfront, directly across the Huangpu from its century-old sister on the Bund, and the building really does read like an ocean liner about to cast off. Dining runs through ARAME, Fu Cheng and the Starlight Room, and the riverside terraces make an easy case for a staycation weekend in Qiantan. Worth knowing even if you live here: the Qiantan park loop and waterfront are right outside the door.
