Your passport works as valid ID for real-name ticketing in China, and the name and number you enter when you book must match the passport you carry to the door, because entry is checked against your face. The practical obstacle is not the passport. It is that Damai and Maoyan both want a mainland phone number to create an account. Trip.com and SmartTicket sell in English without one.
I missed a show I badly wanted to see because I assumed buying a ticket in China worked like buying a ticket anywhere else. I found the listing, I found the date, I got to the payment screen, and the whole thing collapsed over a phone number field. By the time I had worked out what to do the good seats were gone. Nobody had told me that the hard part happens before you ever see a seating chart. So let me tell you now.
What is real-name ticketing, and does my passport count?
Since a joint Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Ministry of Public Security notice took effect on 12 September 2023, commercial performances with an audience capacity over 5,000 are sold under real-name rules. One ticket is bound to one identity document, and the person who bought it has to be the person who walks in. At least 85% of tickets must be sold publicly, and the remaining 15% have to be bound to a real identity 24 hours before the show.
A foreign passport is an accepted document, as is a foreign permanent-resident ID card. That part is genuinely fine.
What matters is the matching. The name and document number you register must be exactly what you present at the door, and by 2026 the standard check at large venues is what the Chinese press calls 人证票脸: person, document, ticket and face, verified together. Facial recognition at the barrier is now normal rather than occasional.
Two consequences worth internalising. First, you cannot buy a ticket for a friend on your own ID and hand it over, and you cannot accept one bought on someone else's. It will not scan, and this catches out people who assume a friendly workaround exists. Second, if your passport is renewed between booking and the show, your number no longer matches. If that happens, contact the platform well ahead, and carry both the old and new passports if you still have them. I have seen this described as a known failure mode rather than a documented policy with a documented fix, so treat it as a reason to act early, not a guaranteed remedy.
Which platform should you use?
大麦 Damai
The Alibaba-owned platform, and the one where the major concerts actually live. An English-facing version exists at en.damai.cn. The catch is registration: in practice account creation expects a mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan phone number. Your passport is used for the real-name identity binding, which is a separate step from signing up. If you have a local number, this is your main route. If you do not, getting one is the single highest-value thing you can do for your cultural life here.
猫眼 Maoyan
Widely recommended in expat guides as the easy passport-friendly alternative. I could not verify that. Maoyan's own registration also asks for a mainland or Greater China phone number, so I would not rely on the claim that it lets you skip that. Strong for film and mid-size events once you are in.
秀动 Showstart
Where the livehouse and independent shows are sold, so this is the one that matters for MAO Livehouse and Modern Sky Lab. Its own materials say it accepts passports and foreign permanent-resident documents for real-name binding.
Trip.com / 携程
Full English, books on passport details, and takes international cards. It is reliably good for attractions, theatre and orchestral programmes. It is not where the hot pop on-sales happen, so do not expect it to solve an arena ticket that sold out in ninety seconds.
SmartTicket
SmartShanghai's own bilingual ticketing service is still running in 2026, licensed and selling directly, with delivery on some events. For an English speaker without a mainland number it is the least frustrating door into the city's show calendar, and worth checking first.
Why does my card keep failing?
Because these platforms settle through Alipay and WeChat Pay rather than taking your card directly. You can bind an international credit card to either wallet, and it does work for ticketing, but the failure points are consistent: your bank blocks a cross-border mobile-wallet charge as suspicious, or a billing-address mismatch fails the transaction silently.
The fix is preparation, not persistence. Bind the card a day or two before an on-sale, not four minutes before it opens, and make a small test purchase so the first charge your bank sees is not a 1,200 RMB concert ticket at three in the morning their time. Can you get a refund?
Sometimes, and less easily than you would like. The 2023 notice requires organisers to operate a tiered refund system, where the fee depends on how far ahead you cancel. In practice enforcement has lagged, refund terms differ sharply between platforms, and "退票难", the difficulty of getting money back, was a significant enough consumer issue that it was still generating national press coverage in 2026. Four major ticketing platforms were summoned by regulators in 2024 over exactly this cluster of problems.
I am deliberately not quoting you a percentage, because the figures circulating are inconsistent and I could not confirm them. Read the refund terms on the specific listing before you pay, and assume a real-name ticket is closer to a plane ticket than a gift card.
One thing that does not exist: an official resale channel for real-name-bound tickets. The whole point of the policy was to shut down scalping, so returning the ticket to the platform is the only sanctioned exit. Anyone offering you a transfer around that is selling you something that will not scan.
