Where can kids hear live jazz in Shanghai this July?
At the Big Whale. Shanghai Children's Art Theatre, the whale-shaped riverside venue on Miaojiang Lu that every local parent calls 大鲸鱼, opens its 2026 Summer Music Island season with Magic Jazz Night: a real jazz band, piano, trumpet and upright bass, playing a 60-minute set written for people whose legs do not reach the floor. Nobody shushes anyone, which is the whole point.
The season continues through August with a cappella and hands-on music workshops, so if the jazz weekend does not fit your calendar, the mini program lineup is worth a scroll anyway.

It is an officially licensed pop-up celebrating 30 years of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the 1995 anime about teenagers piloting biomechanical giants that rewired a generation; your date will either be delighted or will need it explained over scones, and honestly both make for a good afternoon. The 4F tea room at Takashimaya serves character-themed English tea sets, berry souffles and themed tea drinks included, and a 1F counter sells the limited merch, down to 24K gold-plated badges and teacup sets for the truly devoted.
Reservations were only required for the opening week, so you can now walk in during store hours. Weekends draw proper queues of fans in NERV T-shirts; a weekday afternoon is the calm move.

Butterbear is the dancing bear mascot of a Bangkok bakery that conquered the Chinese internet, and this summer the bear has moved into BFC Bund Finance Center. From July 3 there are 32 Butterbear installations across the 5F river-view terrace and the waterfront, China's first Butterbear bakery-themed pop-up, and a dessert market that opened across the first two July weekends, with more sub-events rotating through August.
The genuinely nice part: it costs nothing to wander. You are on the Bund at golden hour, the installations are photogenic, and your only financial risk is the pastry counter.

If you want the full slides-and-wave-pool day, Playa Maya in Songjiang is the 2026 season's main event: it reopened June 14 with an ocean-adventure theme, a huge wave pool, a lazy river, 20-plus large slides and a gentler splash zone for small kids. Through mid-August it stays open to 22:00, and a night session after the sun loses its temper is the civilized way to do it.
