Golden Week moves close to 888 million domestic trips, and they pour into the tourist icons and onto the highways, not into your café on Anfu Lu. The crowds cluster in exactly two places, the postcard sights and the roads. Dodge both and it becomes a rare week of calm, bookable, unhurried Shanghai.

So, stay or escape?

Stay if your week is built on what sits ten minutes from your door: your gym, your regular dinner spots, the park, a slow morning coffee. Go only if you need what the city cannot give you right now, real mountains, a beach, or family time back home. And if you go, the rule is one line: fly, and fly far. The mistake is the short hop, driving to a water town or taking a one-hour high-speed train straight into the traffic everyone else is making.

Why the emptied-out city is the quiet win

Here is what nobody tells you: when Shanghai's own residents leave, they take the impossible dinner reservation, the packed spin class and your brutal commute with them. The restaurant you could never get into on a Friday suddenly has a 7pm slot. The metro has seats. The parks in Xuhui and Jing'an breathe again.

The money backs it up too. Shanghai is a business city, so when the corporate travellers go home, downtown hotel demand falls rather than spikes. Over Golden Week 2025, Ctrip's average room rate in tier-one cities like Shanghai moved only about 2%, while resort spots such as Sanya and Hangzhou jumped hard. The two places to avoid if you stay

Staying only works if you skip the postcard. Visitor traffic into Shanghai rose more than 22% over Golden Week 2025, and the crowd does not spread out evenly, it funnels straight to the icons. The Bund, Yu Garden, Nanjing Road and Shanghai Disney are where the inbound millions go, and scenic spots across the country were selling out their daily tickets on day one.

So treat those four as no-go zones between 1 and 3 October, and again on the last day when the whole country streams home at once. Everything else is yours: the lanes off Wukang Lu, the small museums, a quiet stretch of the Bund promenade at 7am before the tour groups arrive, the West Bund galleries on a weekday-feeling Tuesday.

The smart escape: fly far, and book now

If you are going, commit to going properly. Last year's National Day break saw close to 888 million domestic trips across the mainland (Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 2025), and most moved by road and rail, which is exactly why the short trip backfires. Domestic airfare averaged about ¥613 over Golden Week 2025, up roughly 11% year on year (Meituan), but price is not the real problem. Availability is. Flights, trains and charter cars simply sell out, so a seat booked five weeks out beats a bargain you cannot actually reserve.

Fly to where the crowd thins. Domestically that means the far southwest and northwest, where the country is big enough to swallow the holiday: Yunnan (Kunming, Dali, Lijiang) for mild autumn and food, Guizhou for waterfalls and villages, or Gansu and Xinjiang for desert and mountains if you have the full week. Abroad, Japan topped the overseas list for mainland travellers last Golden Week, with South Korea and Southeast Asia close behind. Mid-Autumn and National Day are two different windows

These are not one long holiday this year, and treating them the same is the classic error. Mid-Autumn, 25 to 27 September, is short, soft and local: mooncakes, family dinners, a lantern-lit evening by the water. It is a stay-in-town weekend, not a fly-out one.

National Day, 1 to 7 October, is the big exodus, seven days when the whole country moves at once. That is the window to either escape early and far, or lean all the way into the calm city the leavers hand you. If you only make one call this season, make it this one: pick the empty city or the far-flung flight, and skip the crowded middle ground of a short weekend trip on the peak days.

Is Shanghai empty during Golden Week 2026?

Not the tourist core, but your part of it, yes. Inbound visitors flood the Bund, Yu Garden and Disney, while residential and expat neighbourhoods in Xuhui and Jing'an noticeably quieten down. Commutes ease, parks empty out and hard-to-book restaurants open up. Skip the icons and the city feels calmer than an ordinary week.

When is Golden Week 2026 in Shanghai?

There are two separate breaks. Mid-Autumn Festival is 25 to 27 September 2026, a three-day weekend. National Day is 1 to 7 October 2026, a seven-day holiday. They do not join up this year, with normal working days on 28 to 30 September in between, plus a couple of make-up workdays around the edges.

Are flights cheaper right after Golden Week?

Usually, yes. Both price and availability ease within a day or two of the holiday ending. In 2025, Shanghai to Hong Kong fares fell under ¥400 the weekend after the rush. If your own leave is flexible, travelling on 8 October or later dodges both the peak fares and the worst of the sell-outs.

Do shops and restaurants stay open in Shanghai during Golden Week?

Yes, and that is the upside of staying. Malls, restaurants, cafes and museums run normal or extended hours, because the holiday is peak business for them. The only things that slow down are government offices, banks and some small independent shops whose owners travel. Your daily life keeps working, minus the crowds.

Should I book a domestic trip or go abroad for Golden Week?

Both work if you book early, both punish you if you do not. Domestic resort towns get pricey and crowded fast; abroad, short-haul routes to Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia sell out first. Decide five weeks out. If you are still undecided at three weeks, the calm Shanghai staycation is the safer, cheaper bet.

Is Shanghai Disney worth it during Golden Week?

Only if queues do not bother you. Golden Week is peak season, so expect very long waits and capacity crowds from 1 to 3 October. If Disney is on your list, go on 28 or 29 September before the National Day rush, buy tickets in advance, and arrive at opening. Otherwise, save it for a normal weekday in late October.
