Non-guests can buy a day pass for one of two daily sessions, 299 RMB on weekdays (399 for two adults) and 499 RMB on weekends; book at least a day ahead through the hotel's WeChat mini-program, where the interface switches to English. One of the more photographed hotel pools in the city right now, and a genuine splurge for a summer afternoon.

It holds 267 rooms and suites, many with floor-to-ceiling windows and a few with terraces, and the interiors nod to the district's layered history. As an Andaz, it leans lifestyle rather than formal, with dining and lounge spaces that pull in locals as much as house guests. The Xujiahui setting puts a metro stop, shopping, and plenty of food within a short walk. Early reviews single out the service and the design. Rates sit at the higher end, in line with a new luxury opening.

The newer of Shanghai's two Waldorfs sits on the New Bund riverfront, directly across the Huangpu from its century-old sister on the Bund, and the building really does read like an ocean liner about to cast off. Dining runs through ARAME, Fu Cheng and the Starlight Room, and the riverside terraces make an easy case for a staycation weekend in Qiantan. Worth knowing even if you live here: the Qiantan park loop and waterfront are right outside the door.
