The Shanghai Shortlist: Plan the Holidays, Chase the Sunset

The holidays are closer than they feel

Two long breaks are almost here, and the people who plan now are the ones not paying triple for a train ticket later. Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday 25 September, which makes a three-day weekend through the 27th. Then National Day runs a full week, 1 to 7 October. Two things worth noting: both are peak travel windows, so book any escape early, and China swaps a couple of weekends to stitch the runs together, so Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October are working days. If you are staying in the city, the famous spots will be packed and the residential lanes will empty out, which is its own quiet pleasure. The heat is finally breaking

Early September is the turn. The wall of humidity starts to lift, the evenings become usable again, and the short window before it gets properly cold is a genuinely good stretch for the city's terraces. If the last hot days still flatten you, the summer survival notes hold for another week or two, but the real move now is simply to be outside at dusk. Where I would spend a warm evening this week

Tales, the rooftop on top of Banyan Tree on the North Bund, is built for exactly this stretch of the calendar: a wide terrace, the river on both sides, and a cocktail list that opens around 5:30 just as the light turns gold. Go for the sunset rather than a full dinner, and book a terrace table if the sky looks clear. It is the kind of evening you will want to send a photo of.

Short version: do not let a renewal collide with a public holiday, because the offices close and the queues afterward are brutal. If your permit expires anywhere near late September or early October, start the paperwork now. The rules also shifted this year, so it is worth a fresh look at what changed before you assume last year's process still applies.
