How to Collect Parcels in Shanghai: Cainiao Stations & Hive Box Lockers (2026)

In Shanghai most parcels do not come to your door: they go to a Cainiao station or a Hive Box locker near you, and you collect them with a pickup code from your phone.

In Shanghai most parcels do not come to your door: couriers drop them at a neighbourhood Cainiao station (菜鸟驿站) or a Hive Box (丰巢) smart locker near you, and you collect them with a pickup code sent to your phone. At a station you show the code or your QR; at a locker you tap the screen, enter the code, and the door pops open. Pickup is usually free within the first day or two.

Why didn't my parcel come to my door?

Because door delivery is the exception here, not the rule. To move huge volumes cheaply, couriers for Taobao, JD and most e-commerce leave parcels at a shared collection point for your compound or street: either a Cainiao station (a small staffed shop packed with shelves) or a bank of Hive Box lockers. You get a notification with a code, then collect at your convenience. It feels strange at first, but it means you never miss a delivery because you were at work. If you would rather have things brought up, see the question on door delivery below.

How do I collect from a Cainiao station (菜鸟驿站)?

Show your pickup code at the counter or scan it yourself. Step by step:

  1. Wait for the notice. You get an SMS or a Cainiao (菜鸟) app alert with a pickup code (取件码) and the station address when your parcel lands.
  2. Go to the station. It is usually inside or beside your residential compound, or a few doors down the street.
  3. Give the code. Read out or show the pickup code, or scan the QR code in the app at the self-service scanner. Staff find your parcel on the shelves.
  4. Check and go. Confirm your name on the label before you leave. Collection is free.

How do I open a Hive Box (丰巢) locker?

Enter the code on the locker's touchscreen and the right door opens automatically.

  1. Get the code. Hive Box texts you a pickup code, or you open the 丰巢 WeChat mini-program (search 丰巢 in WeChat) to see your waiting parcels.
  2. At the locker, tap the screen. Choose the pickup option, then tap the keyboard icon to type the code, or scan the QR from the mini-program.
  3. Take your parcel. One compartment clicks open. Grab your box and close the door firmly.

How do I find my pickup code?

Three reliable places: the SMS from the courier (look for 取件码 followed by digits), the Cainiao app (tap "My" in the bottom right, then the pickup-code option), or the logistics detail inside your Taobao or JD order. If you shop a lot on Taobao, our Taobao guide shows where the tracking sits in the app.

Are there fees, and how long can a parcel sit there?

Cainiao stations hold parcels free for a few days, so there is no rush. Hive Box lockers give you a free holding window (often around half a day to a day), after which some lockers charge a small storage fee to free up space; the exact window and any fee show on the locker screen and in the mini-program, so read the notice when you collect. The practical rule: grab locker parcels the same day, and station parcels within a couple of days.

Can I get parcels delivered to my door instead?

Often, yes. Many Cainiao stations offer paid door delivery (送货上门), which you can request in the app, and you can message the courier through the order to ask them to bring it up, especially for heavy or bulky items. For fresh food and meals you order through Meituan or Ele.me, riders bring those straight to you and do not use lockers.

Common questions

What is a pickup code (取件码)?

It is the short number that proves the parcel is yours. You show it at a Cainiao station or type it into a Hive Box locker to release your package. It arrives by SMS and also sits in the Cainiao app.

Can I collect someone else's parcel for them?

Yes, if you have their pickup code. Stations and lockers release the parcel to whoever presents the correct code, which is handy for collecting a flatmate's delivery.

My parcel says delivered but I got no code. What now?

Open the order's logistics detail to see which station or locker took it, then check the Cainiao app or your SMS spam folder for the code. If it is still missing, contact the seller or courier through the order chat.

Do I need the Cainiao app at all?

Not strictly, since codes come by SMS, but the app centralises every incoming parcel, stores your codes, and lets you request door delivery, so it is worth installing if you shop online often. It pairs well with buying second-hand on Xianyu.
