Yes, you can use Taobao in English.

The short version: you can shop Taobao, China's giant online marketplace, entirely in English by switching the app's region to Hong Kong to unlock an English interface, or by letting your phone translate the screen live, then paying with an international card linked to Alipay and having it all delivered to your door for a few kuai. Here is the whole thing, set up once, used forever.

Taobao is how life in Shanghai actually gets furnished, fixed, and stocked. Phone charger, curtain rail, a specific spice, a costume for a party tomorrow, a replacement part for something obscure, it is all there for less than you would usually pay elsewhere. The interface looks intimidating in Chinese, but you do not need to read a word of it. Let me walk you through it.

Can expats use Taobao without a Chinese ID or bank account?

Yes. You can register with a foreign phone number, and you do not need a Chinese ID card or a Chinese bank account. Since 2023 Alipay lets you link an international Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, or Diners Club card, and because Taobao checks out through Alipay, your foreign card just works at the till. That single change is what made Taobao fully usable for people who have not opened a local account yet.

How do I change Taobao to English?

On the app (the setting that unlocks English)

  1. Download Taobao from your app store and log in.
  2. Go to My Taobao (the bottom-right tab, 我的淘宝).
  3. Open Settings (the small gear icon).
  4. Find the country/region setting and choose Hong Kong, China (中国香港).
  5. Then open Language and Currency and pick English.

This gives you an English interface for browsing and checkout. It is not a perfect, complete translation of every seller's listing, but the buttons, categories, and order flow become readable, which is what you need.

The live-translation shortcut

Honestly, I often skip the setting and just let my phone translate. On iPhone, long-press text or use the built-in translate; on Android, Circle to Search and Google Lens overlay English on top of the Chinese instantly. On the desktop site (taobao.com), right-click and choose "Translate to English" in Chrome and the whole page flips. Product descriptions written by sellers translate roughly, but you get the gist.

The trick that beats reading anything: image search

Tap the little camera icon in the search bar and upload a photo of the thing you want. Taobao's image search reads shape, colour, and pattern and finds the item across thousands of sellers. Screenshot something you saw in a shop, upload it, and compare prices. This is the Taobao skill I lean on most, and it needs zero Chinese.

How do I pay on Taobao with a foreign card?

At checkout, choose Alipay as the payment method and pay with the international card you linked. There is no service fee on payments under 200 RMB (about USD 30); above that, Alipay charges roughly 3 percent on the foreign-card transaction. For anything big, a linked Chinese bank account avoids that fee, but for everyday orders the convenience is worth it. If you have not set up Alipay yet, my Alipay and WeChat Pay guide for expats covers linking the card.

Does Taobao ship to the US or Europe?

Most of the time, no, not directly. Only a small minority of Taobao listings offer official direct international shipping, and those are concentrated on a handful of markets such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Everything else is domestic-only, which is why overseas buyers use a consolidation address instead.

The mechanism is the same whichever route you take. Set your account address to an overseas one and Taobao surfaces its own cross-border option at checkout, where you pay the seller plus domestic delivery to a Cainiao warehouse, let your parcels pool there for a couple of weeks, then pay international shipping on the combined box. Independent forwarding services work identically: you ship to their Chinese warehouse, they repack and send the lot on. Either way you are paying twice, once inside China and once out of it, so consolidating several orders into one shipment is what keeps it sane. Watch for listings that quote a high price with shipping already baked in; a 40 RMB (about USD 6) item can appear at three times that once international handling is included.

If you are in Shanghai and posting things home yourself, the cost comparison lives in our guide to sending a parcel abroad from Shanghai.

How does delivery work, and what do I put as my address?

Add your address in the app under your profile. Write your building and unit clearly; couriers deliver to your door or to a nearby smart locker or a Cainiao pickup station. When you order, you get an SMS or an in-app code; if it goes to a locker or station, you scan or enter the code to collect. Most of Shanghai gets next-day or even same-city same-day delivery, and it usually costs a few RMB or nothing.

How do I track an order or return something?

Go to My Orders to see status. Once the seller ships, you get a tracking number; the Cainiao section in the app follows it, or paste it into 17Track. To return, open the order and choose the refund or return option (退款/退货); many sellers accept returns, and Taobao's buyer protection holds your payment until you confirm you received the item, so do not tap "confirm receipt" until the parcel is actually in your hands and fine.

How do I read reviews and avoid bad sellers?

Sort by sales first, then read the pictures in the reviews rather than the words. Open the review tab and look for buyer photos (买家秀); real shots from real buyers tell you more than any star rating, and a translation app handles the short comments fine. Favour listings with high monthly sales and a store rating shown in small hearts, diamonds or crowns beside the shop name. If one price sits far below everything else for the same item, read that as a warning, not a bargain. When something arrives wrong or broken, open the order and tap refund or return (退款/退货); Taobao holds your payment in escrow until it is settled, which is the quiet reason the whole thing feels safe to use.

A few insider tips

Once Taobao clicks, the rest of daily life gets easier too. If you are still finding your feet, my guide on renting in Shanghai without getting burned pairs well with a first furniture haul.

Which one is for you 哪个适合你

If you want to set things up once, switch the app region to Hong Kong for the English interface. If you would rather not touch settings, let your phone translate the screen live. If you cannot describe the item in any language, search with the camera icon. For payments under 200 RMB a linked foreign card carries no fee; above that, roughly 3 percent.

As Laozi wrote in the Tao Te Ching, 知足者富, he who knows he has enough is already rich. A full cart is easy in this city; the quieter skill is closing the app once you have what you actually came for.

常见问题

Is Taobao available in English?

There is no single English toggle on the main app, but switching the region to Hong Kong, China unlocks an English interface for the buttons, categories and checkout. On the desktop site, Chrome's "Translate to English" flips the whole page, and on your phone, live translation reads any listing. You never need to read Chinese to shop.

Can I use Taobao without a Chinese ID, bank account, or phone number?

Yes to all three. You register with a foreign phone number, and since 2023 Alipay links an international Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover or Diners Club card, so no Chinese ID or bank account is needed. A local number only makes delivery texts and seller chat smoother; it is not required.

How do I pay on Taobao with a foreign card, and are there fees?

Choose Alipay at checkout and pay with your linked international card. Payments under 200 RMB (about USD 30) carry no service fee; above that, Alipay adds roughly 3 percent on the foreign-card transaction. A linked Chinese bank account avoids the fee, which only matters on larger orders.

Does Taobao ship to the United States or Europe?

Rarely as a direct option. A small share of listings ship internationally, mostly to a few Asia-Pacific markets. US and Europe buyers normally set an overseas address to unlock Taobao's cross-border checkout, or use a forwarding service, pooling several orders into one warehouse box and paying international shipping once.

How do I find something if I cannot describe it in Chinese?

Tap the camera icon in the search bar and upload a photo. Taobao's image search reads shape, colour and pattern and finds matching items across thousands of sellers. Screenshot something you saw in a shop, upload it, and compare prices. It needs zero Chinese and is the trick most people lean on.

How do I return an item or get a refund on Taobao?

Open the order and choose the refund or return option (退款/退货). Taobao holds your payment in escrow until you confirm receipt, so never tap "confirm receipt" until the parcel is in your hands and fine. Many sellers accept returns, and buyer protection settles disputes if one does not.
