What are the hidden fees on top of tuition?

They split into one-off charges you pay to join and annual charges you pay every year after. The one-off hits are the ones newcomers underestimate.

The application fee is non-refundable and buys nothing but an assessment slot, so apply to three or four schools and treat it as a sunk cost. The enrolment or registration fee and the capital levy are the big year-one shocks: together they can add RMB 40,000 to 130,000 before your child sits a single lesson. Some schools also hold a refundable deposit, returned when you leave and the school property comes back undamaged.

What does one child cost, all in?

Add tuition, the annual extras and the year-one one-offs and a realistic first-year bill lands well above the headline. Take a mid-tier school at RMB 300,000 tuition: add roughly RMB 32,000 enrolment, RMB 22,500 capital levy, RMB 24,000 bus, RMB 15,000 lunch, RMB 8,000 uniforms and supplies and RMB 10,000 in trips, and year one comes to about RMB 411,000. From year two the one-offs fall away and it settles near RMB 357,000.

If you are paying yourself, the bilingual tier buys a genuine education for roughly RMB 150,000 to 210,000 all in, while the premium end mostly buys brand, campus and cohort rather than better exam results. Skip the premium tier if your allowance stops at tuition, and never plan around getting the application fee back, because you will not.
