Tales is the rooftop bar crowning Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund, up on the North Bund in Hongkou. The whole reason to come is the view: a wide, open terrace that wraps almost the whole way around, so you can follow the Huangpu in both directions and take in the Lujiazui skyline straight across the water. The setting is lush and modern, low lounge sofas around a long bar, and the kitchen pairs cocktails with a tapas menu built on the link between the Mekong and the Huangpu. Afternoon tea runs from 2:30pm, and the cocktail list opens around 5:30pm, which is when the light on the river turns gold. Treat it as a sunset drink rather than a full dinner, and book ahead for a terrace table on a clear evening.
