Shanghai Library East is the vast modern public library that opened in 2022 near Century Park in Pudong, a short walk from Science and Technology Museum station. One of the largest libraries in the country, it is free to enter with no card or booking needed just to read on its soaring terraced floors, which makes it a calm, beautiful place to spend a cold afternoon. Bring your passport if you want a card: a reading card is free, and a borrowing card carries a small refundable deposit of about ¥100. Both the East building and the original library on Huaihai Middle Road hold English-language collections.
