Board at Hongqiao after dinner, wake up in Kowloon before breakfast: the nightly sleeper does Shanghai to Hong Kong in eleven hours and throws in the bed.
Every night a Fuxing sleeper leaves Shanghai Hongqiao at 20:15 and pulls into Hong Kong West Kowloon at 07:25, eleven hours and ten minutes later. A berth starts at ¥860 (USD 128, at about 6.7 yuan and 7.8 Hong Kong dollars to the US dollar, September 2026), and that bunk quietly replaces the hotel night a flight would still make you pay for.
The overnight train, in one minute
The sleeper launched on 15 June 2024 and, since that October, runs on new sixteen-car Fuxing sets, nightly as of September 2026. It has been renumbered more than once, listed as G900 southbound in 2026 with the return as G899, so search Hongqiao to West Kowloon by date on 12306 rather than chasing a train number, which is the part that keeps changing.

The lower berths sell out first, which raises the obvious question: what does a bunk cost?
What a berth costs on the night train
A berth is priced like an airline seat now. China Railway floats the fare with demand, so the same bunk costs more on a Friday than a Tuesday, and more again over Golden Week 2026. These came off 12306 in mid September 2026, weeknights through the holiday peak.

One honesty note: the British and American prices buy a small private room, while the Chinese fare buys one bed in a shared four-bunk compartment, so they are not like for like. What the box shows is that Shanghai's night train sits at the cheap end of the world's sleeper rides. Cheap against the plane is the more interesting question.
The honest math against a cheap flight
Flying takes about two and a half hours in the air, and the fare alone often undercuts a lower berth. That flatters the plane. An evening flight lands you at bedtime, so you buy a hotel night before the trip even starts; the sleeper folds that night into the ticket.

The flight fares are from aggregators in September 2026; the hotel line is Hong Kong's official average room rate across every category, not a splurge. Add that night to even a bargain fare and the flight stops looking cheap. The hard part is the ticket.
The overnight berth to Hong Kong trades a few hours for a bed and a city-centre arrival, with no 5am airport run and no baggage carousel at the far end.
Booking on 12306 before the berths go
Tickets open on 12306 fifteen days before departure, and you book with your passport, no Chinese ID needed; our 12306 booking walkthrough for passport holders covers the English app step by step, and Hong Kong buyers can use MTR channels too. The catch is supply. When we checked on 18 September 2026, the next Friday night showed four berths left, and 1 October showed none. A weekend or holiday bunk is a set-an-alarm purchase the morning sales open. Before you set that alarm, check what the border does to your visa.
The border and the visa catch
Boarding at Hongqiao is a real exit from mainland China, even though nobody stamps you until morning. The station feels like a domestic departure, no immigration counters; both the mainland exit check and the Hong Kong entry check wait at West Kowloon, done back to back when you arrive.
That one fact decides who should book. A single-entry Chinese visa is spent the moment you ride, so coming back means a fresh one. Travellers on the 30-day visa-free scheme simply leave, and Hong Kong grants most European, North American and Australasian passports 90 to 180 visa-free days of its own. Transiting? The 240-hour visa-free transit rules now list West Kowloon as an approved exit port, added 5 November 2025, with Hong Kong counting as the onward destination.
Which one is for you
If you sleep well in motion, count hotel money as real money, or hold a passport that makes mainland re-entry easy, take the train and wake up in Kowloon with the whole day ahead. If you are guarding a single-entry visa, your dates are locked to a sold-out night, or eleven horizontal hours sounds like a punishment, fly and book the hotel with a clear conscience.
Laozi wrote 千里之行，始于足下, a journey of a thousand li begins beneath your feet. This one covers nearly two thousand kilometres of coastline while your feet are up on a bunk, which feels like cheating.
Is there a daytime high speed train from Shanghai to Hong Kong?
Yes. A daytime service, listed as G99 in 2026, leaves Hongqiao around 13:53 and reaches West Kowloon near 21:56, about eight hours, seated, second class about ¥940 (USD 140). Extra daytime trains appear in peak seasons, so check the day list on 12306. If sitting up for eight hours sounds long, that is the case for the bunk.
Is there power and wifi at the berth?
Power yes, wifi no. Each berth has a socket with mainland and Hong Kong plugs plus USB and USB-C, a reading light and a small toiletries pack. There is no onboard wifi, so load up your phone data or a local SIM before you settle in for the night.
Can I choose a lower berth when booking on 12306?
Yes. 12306 offers a berth preference at checkout, and on this train even bed numbers are upper berths while odd numbers are lower, per MTR's sleeper guide. Lower berths cost more and sell first: you get the window ledge and nobody climbs over you at midnight.
How much luggage can I take on the sleeper train?
Each adult may carry 20kg, and no single piece can exceed 130cm in combined dimensions, under MTR's high speed rail rules. Cases go under the lower bunks plus an end-of-car rack; anything bigger travels as consigned freight, so pack like a generous carry-on.
