Shanghai Rooftop Bars 2026: What's Worth the Price

By Choice Dining Editor · 6 min read · Updated August 2026 · Fact-checked 事实核查 · standards 标准

Roosevelt Sky Bar in Shanghai offers a classic Bund view, but does it earn its markup?

Only a few Shanghai rooftops earn their markup: FLAIR for sheer altitude over Pudong, a garden-style hotel terrace for slow evenings, and Highline for a theme that rebuilds every season. For the same skyline with no minimum spend and no dress code, a hostel rooftop in the old city does it for a fraction of the price: a ¥30-50 beer against a ¥120-plus cocktail upstairs. Book the half hour before sunset, on a weeknight.

July in Shanghai means one thing after 6pm: the heat finally breaks, and everyone who spent the day in air conditioning heads up. Rooftop season here runs roughly spring through autumn, and this stretch of summer, string lights on, humidity be damned, is when it’s at its liveliest. It’s also when every “top 10 rooftop bars in Shanghai” list starts circulating again, most of them written by someone who visited once, if at all.

I’ve sent people up to nearly every serious rooftop in this city over eight years, for a first date, a client dinner, a visiting parent who wants “the postcard view.” The view is never really the question. The question is whether what’s in your glass and the thirty minutes you spend waiting for a table are worth what you’re about to pay for a skyline everyone in this city has already seen for free from a hundred other windows.

Which Shanghai rooftop bars earn the markup?

A small number of Shanghai’s rooftops are doing something you genuinely can’t get anywhere else, and those are worth the price without an asterisk.

RooftopWhat a drink runsMinimum spend
Highest-altitude, Pudong (FLAIR)¥120-180 a cocktailExpect a table minimum on peak weekends
Garden-style hotel terrace¥110-160 a cocktailExpect a table minimum on peak weekends
Hostel rooftop, old city¥30-50 a beerNone, and no dress code

Typical drink prices as of August 2026, for orientation rather than a fixed tariff.

The bar that markets itself as the highest in the city, and in China. There’s exactly one rooftop that can claim this, and the altitude alone changes what the skyline looks like: Pudong stops being a wall of towers and starts looking like a model of itself. FLAIR sits on the 58th floor of the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong. Go once for the occasion. Go back only if the drinks earn a second visit on their own.

Lingyue’s note

I still remember the elevator ride up to FLAIR the first time, that stretch where the doors open and the whole room tilts toward the window before you’ve even ordered. It’s not a cheap night. It doesn’t need to be, once you’re standing at the rail with Pudong laid out like a model of itself. If you want the same altitude with a plate in front of you instead of a glass, the 47th floor at the Bulgari Hotel does a Michelin-level Italian menu with the exact same view attached.

The hanging-garden hotel rooftop: A long open-air terrace built more like a garden party than a bar: ivy-covered trellis, daybeds, a bartender program serious enough to bring in guest shifts from award-winning names. This is the one to book for a slow evening rather than a photo and a drink.

The one that reinvents itself with the seasons:  Instead of the same fit-out year-round, this rooftop rebuilds its whole theme two or three times a year, sakura in spring, a full winter wonderland by December. It means the “same old rooftop” complaint doesn’t apply, and it’s worth checking what’s currently up before you assume you’ve already seen it.

Lingyue’s note

I’ve caught Highline mid-changeover between themes before, half sakura, half whatever came next, and it was still worth the visit. That’s the thing about a rooftop that actually commits to reinventing itself: even the in-between version is more interesting than most bars manage on a good night.

Is there a Shanghai rooftop bar with no minimum spend?

Not every rooftop needs to be a splurge. There’s a hostel rooftop in the old city that quietly offers a panoramic skyline view for a fraction of what the five-star properties charge, no dress code, no minimum spend lecture. It’s not going to be in anyone’s glossy roundup, but it’s the one I send budget-conscious friends to when they still want the view without the ceremony.

How to Actually Enjoy a Shanghai Rooftop

  • Go on a weeknight if you can. Weekend rooftops in peak season mean a wait, a table minimum, and a crowd there for the photo, not the drink.
  • Book the golden hour, not just “night.” The 30 minutes before sunset is when the skyline actually performs. Arrive earlier than you think you need to.
  • Ask what’s seasonal before you go. Several rooftops change entirely with the season. What you saw last year may not be what’s up now.
  • Budget for one, not a crawl. Rooftop bars are not built for bar-hopping economics. Pick the one that matches the occasion and commit to it.
Lingyue’s note

For a visiting parent, I go with the garden-style terrace, slower, easier to talk over. For a first date, somewhere with a view big enough to fill the silences. For a client dinner, the one with the tallest claim in the city, because sometimes the point is simply to impress, and there’s no shame in that.

Which rooftop bars should you skip?

I won’t name names here (some of these places have good lawyers), but the pattern is consistent: a hotel that renovated a rooftop for the Instagram photo and never invested in the bar program behind it. You’ll recognise it fast, a menu with more adjectives than actual craft, a wait longer than the visit deserves, and a pour that tastes like an afterthought. If the staff can’t tell you what’s actually good on the menu, that’s your answer.

The honest tell: a great rooftop makes you forget you’re paying a premium. A mediocre one reminds you of it with every sip.

Lingyue’s note

If you find a rooftop I’ve missed, one that actually earns its markup, I want to hear about it. Send it my way, and if you’re building out the rest of your evening, my dining guide is a good place to start before you head up.

Which one is for you 哪个适合你

If you are impressing a client or a visiting parent who wants the postcard, book FLAIR. If you want a slow evening you can actually talk through, choose the garden-style terrace. If you have seen the classics already, check what Highline has rebuilt this season. If you want the view without the bill, take the hostel rooftop in the old city.

Common questions

Is there a rooftop bar in Shanghai without a minimum spend?

Yes. A hostel rooftop in the old city gives you the same panoramic skyline with no minimum spend and no dress code, at a fraction of what the five-star properties charge. It will not appear in the glossy roundups, which is part of why it stays pleasant. Buy a cheap beer, take the view, and spend the difference on dinner afterwards.

Which Shanghai rooftop bars are worth the price?

The ones doing something you cannot get at street level. FLAIR earns it on sheer altitude over Pudong, a garden-style hotel terrace earns it on atmosphere for a slow evening you can talk through, and Highline earns it by rebuilding its theme every season so a return visit is not a repeat. Outside those, you are usually paying for the view alone.

What is the highest rooftop bar in Shanghai?

One rooftop in Pudong markets itself as the highest in Shanghai, and in China. It is a genuine occasion and worth going once for the view. Go back only if the room and the drinks earn a second visit on their own merits, because the altitude alone stops being remarkable after the first hour.

When is rooftop season in Shanghai?

Roughly spring through autumn, with July and August as the peak despite the humidity. Most terraces close or go quiet in winter, though a few reinvent their theme with the seasons instead of shutting. For the wider hot-weather playbook, our Shanghai summer survival guide pairs well with this one.

When should you book a Shanghai rooftop table?

Aim for the half hour before sunset, and book it rather than walking up. That is when the skyline actually performs, and it is also the slot everyone else wants. A weeknight booking avoids the weekend combination of a wait, a table minimum and a crowd that came for the photograph rather than the drink.

Which rooftop bars should you skip?

The pattern is consistent enough to spot from the menu: a hotel that renovated a rooftop for the photograph and never invested in the bar programme behind it. More adjectives than craft, a wait longer than the visit deserves, and a pour that tastes like an afterthought. If the staff cannot tell you what is actually good, that is your answer.

Does the Roosevelt Sky Bar in Shanghai offer a Bund view?

Yes, the Roosevelt Sky Bar is known for its panoramic view of the Bund skyline. It is one of the classic rooftop spots for viewing the iconic skyline across the Huangpu River.
