Shanghai City God Temple
上海城隍庙
Shanghai City God Temple is a working Taoist temple in Huangpu, at the heart of the old town beside the Yu Garden bazaar. Founded in the Ming dynasty and rebuilt over nearly six centuries, it honours the city gods of Shanghai and still draws worshippers lighting incense alongside curious visitors. Entry is around ¥10, and it opens daily from 8:30 to 5. Good for a first-timer half-day around Yu Garden, a look at living folk religion, and street snacks in the surrounding lanes. Go early to beat the tour groups, and keep the temple grounds separate in your head from the shopping bazaar that shares the name.
