Five quiet money moves to make before December 31 in Shanghai, from your year-end bonus tax method to the forex quota that resets January 1.
The quick version: before December 31, pick how your year-end bonus is taxed, confirm your special deductions are logged in the tax app, use any remaining annual leave, cancel the subscriptions quietly draining you, and move money home before your foreign-exchange quota resets on January 1. None of it takes long, and each one puts real money back in your pocket or stops it leaking out. As of late October 2026 you have roughly two months, so this is December-you's gift to January-you. Here is the full list, with the deadlines that actually bite.
Good to know
- Good for: any salaried expat in Shanghai who wants to close the year without leaving money on the table.
- What you'll save: a smarter bonus election and claimed deductions alone can be worth thousands of RMB (hundreds of USD or more).
- Make the most of it: block one quiet hour in December, open the 个人所得税 app and your banking app, and work down the table below.
Decide how your year-end bonus is taxed
Your year-end bonus in China can be taxed one of two ways, and the choice is yours to make: as a separate one-off lump (the 全年一次性奖金 method) or merged into your annual comprehensive income. Which one wins depends entirely on your salary and bonus size, and the gap between them can run to several thousand RMB (roughly USD 500 to 2,000), so this is the single highest-value money move of the season. The separate-taxation option has been extended through December 31, 2027, so it is still on the table this year. We walk through the actual math, and which method suits which income, in how your year-end bonus is taxed.

Confirm your deductions are actually logged
China's special additional deductions, 专项附加扣除, cut the tax you pay on rent, children's education, continuing education, elderly care and more, but only if they are entered correctly in the 个人所得税 app. December is when you confirm next year's entries so your January withholding is right, and it is also your last clean look before the annual reconciliation runs in the spring. Plenty of expats quietly overpay all year simply because a box was never ticked. The ones people miss most often are collected in the deductions expats in Shanghai miss, and it is worth a five-minute check before year-end.
| The move | Do it by | Why it bites |
|---|---|---|
| Choose your bonus tax method | Before payroll runs the bonus | The one-off method can save or cost you thousands |
| Confirm your 2027 special deductions | By mid-December in the 个税 app | Wrong entries mean a smaller refund next spring |
| Spend or bank remittances home | Before December 31 | The USD 50,000 forex quota resets January 1 |
| Use annual leave and cancel dead renewals | Before year-end | Unused days and silent subscriptions just vanish |
| Sort a lease that renews near New Year | 6 to 8 weeks ahead | Negotiate before the spring rental market tightens |
None of it takes long, and each one puts real money back in your pocket or stops it leaking out.
Use the leave and kill the dead renewals
Two kinds of money vanish at year-end if you ignore them. The first is annual leave: statutory paid days do not always carry over, and many Shanghai employers reset the counter on December 31, so unused days are simply gone. Book them, or at least ask HR in writing what happens to the balance. The second is the slow leak of auto-renewing subscriptions, gym memberships and app tiers you forgot you were paying for, which is exactly the quiet drain we pulled apart in the silent auto-renewals draining your wallet. A year-end sweep of your WeChat and Alipay auto-deductions usually finds at least one you meant to cancel months ago.
Move money home before the quota resets
Every individual in China has an annual foreign-exchange facilitation quota of USD 50,000, and it resets on January 1. If you have been meaning to send savings or a bonus home and you still have room in this year's quota, using it before December 31 means you start January with a fresh USD 50,000 rather than squeezing two years of transfers through one window. The steps, the apps and the paperwork are in how to send money out of China. If you are nowhere near the limit, there is nothing to rush, this one is only for the people with real money to move.
Price in the allowance clock and the lease
Two slower-moving items belong on the December list because they reward planning ahead. The first is the expat tax clock: the benefit-in-kind allowances that make a high Shanghai salary work, for housing, schooling and language training, are tax-free only through December 31, 2027, so anyone staying past that should start modelling the higher effective rate now rather than being surprised by it, as we lay out in the allowances ending December 31, 2027. The second is your lease: if it renews around the new year, open the conversation with your landlord six to eight weeks early, because the spring rental market tightens and a calm December negotiation beats a rushed February one.
If you only do three things
If December gets away from you, do these three. Pick your bonus tax method before payroll runs it, because nothing else this year is worth as much per minute. Check your special deductions in the 个税 app, because an unticked box costs you all year. And do a five-minute sweep of your auto-renewals, because that is the one leak you can close today. The leave, the lease and the remittance can wait a few days; the bonus election cannot.
When is the deadline to choose my year-end bonus tax method in Shanghai?
Practically, before your employer runs the bonus through payroll, since the withholding is calculated at that point, and many firms pay the bonus between December and the Spring Festival. The separate one-off taxation method is available through December 31, 2027, so it applies this cycle. Confirm with your payroll team which method they will apply and whether you can elect the other.
How much can I transfer out of China in one year?
Each individual has an annual foreign-exchange purchase facilitation quota of USD 50,000, set by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, and it resets on January 1. Legitimate transfers for personal use within that quota are routine through your bank. Larger or business-related transfers follow a different, documented process.
Do my special additional deductions carry over automatically each year?
No. The 个人所得税 app asks you to confirm or update your 专项附加扣除 entries for the coming year, usually from December. If you skip it, some entries may lapse and your January withholding will be higher than it needs to be. A two-minute review each December keeps your monthly tax correct.
Will I lose unused annual leave at the end of the year in Shanghai?
It depends on your employer. Statutory paid annual leave does not always roll over, and many Shanghai companies clear the balance on December 31. Some pay out unused days, some do not. Ask HR in writing what your company does, then book the days you are owed before the cut-off.
Is any of this tax advice I should act on alone?
Treat this as a checklist, not personalised tax advice. The rules here are general and current as of October 2026, but your own situation, employer and residency can change the answer. For the bonus election and anything on the annual reconciliation, confirm with your payroll team or a licensed tax adviser before you act.

As the Dao De Jing has it, 千里之行,始于足下, a journey of a thousand miles begins beneath your feet. A richer new year starts with one quiet hour in December, not a grand plan in January.
