How Singles Day 11.11 Actually Works in Shanghai (2026)

By Choice Essentials Editor · 6 min read · September 2026 · Fact-checked 事实核查 · standards 标准

Singles Day is not the one-day flash sale newcomers expect: the real prices open with a late-October pre-sale you lock in with a deposit.

Singles Day, 双十一, lands on 11 November, and it is a shopping event so large it dwarfs Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Here is the part nobody tells a newcomer: it is no longer a one-day flash sale. In 2026 the real discounts open with a pre-sale in the second half of October, you lock them with a small deposit, and you pay the balance later. Play that game and you save real money. Ignore it and you pay full price on the eleventh like a tourist.

Good to know

  • Good for anyone in Shanghai who buys anything online and wants the year's lowest prices without getting played by fake discounts.
  • When it runs pre-sale opens in the second half of October; the two big checkout waves are around 1 November and 11 November.
  • Watch out for the non-refundable deposit, the prices quietly raised before the sale, and the returns queue that clogs for two weeks afterwards.

When Singles Day actually happens in 2026

Singles Day in China is a three-week campaign, not a single date, and treating it as one day is the classic newcomer mistake. The calendar below is the shape it has taken every recent year on Tmall, Taobao and JD; the exact dates shift a little, so confirm them in the app when the banners appear, but the rhythm is reliable.

The takeaway: the lowest prices are usually locked during pre-sale with a deposit, not grabbed on 11 November itself. By the eleventh the sharpest pre-sale deals are often gone, so the smart money moves in late October.

How the deposit-and-balance trick works

The deposit-and-balance system, 定金 and 尾款, is the mechanic expats get wrong most. During pre-sale you pay a small deposit, often ¥50 (about USD 7), to reserve an item at its sale price. Then you pay the balance during a fixed window a week or two later. The catch that stings: the deposit is usually non-refundable if you do not pay the balance in time, so a forgotten reminder means lost money. The upside is real too, because the deposit often inflates, so a ¥50 (about USD 7) deposit can knock ¥70 (about USD 10) or more off the final price. Set an alarm for the balance window the moment you pay a deposit.

How to actually save, not just feel like you did

Stacking is where the real money is, because the discounts are designed to layer. Start with the app's cross-store coupons (满减), the "spend ¥300, save ¥50" (about USD 42, save USD 7) type that apply across your whole basket, then add store coupons, then any red-envelope (红包) credits you collected from the app's mini-games. If you shop enough to justify it, 88VIP membership adds another layer on top. Two habits do most of the work: build a wishlist through October so you can pay balances fast when the window opens, and batch your buys to cross the 满减 thresholds instead of checking out item by item.

Which "deals" are actually fake

Not every red price tag is a real cut, and the oldest trick in the book is alive and well: a seller quietly raises the price in October, then "discounts" it back to normal for the sale. The fix is a price-history check. A tracker like 慢慢买 or the price-history view inside apps such as 什么值得买 shows you what the item actually cost over the past months, so you can see whether the Singles Day price is a genuine low or theatre. If a "half price" deal has no history to back it, treat it as full price with a bow on top.

How returns work in the crush

China's 7-day no-reason return (7天无理由退货) still applies during Singles Day, so a regular purchase you dislike goes back within seven days of delivery, no explanation needed. Two things change in November: delivery slows to a crawl as the whole country ships at once, so a parcel that normally arrives next day can take a week; and if your order included free return-shipping insurance (运费险), the return postage is covered, otherwise you pay it. Pre-sale deposit items can carry their own return terms, so read those before you commit a deposit rather than after. Our refund guide covers the escalation route if a seller stalls.

Confucius listed 见得思义 among the marks of a careful mind: when you see something to gain, pause and weigh whether it is truly worth having. A Singles Day cart is the perfect place to practise it.

Common questions

When does Singles Day start in 2026?

The pre-sale opens in the second half of October, when you pay deposits to lock discounts, and the two main balance-payment and checkout waves fall around 1 November and 11 November. It is a three-week campaign rather than a single day, and the deepest prices are usually locked during pre-sale, not on the eleventh itself.

What is the deposit and balance system on Taobao and Tmall?

You pay a small deposit, often ¥50 (about USD 7), during pre-sale to reserve an item at its sale price, then pay the remaining balance in a set window a week or two later. The deposit is usually non-refundable if you skip the balance, but it often inflates, so ¥50 can count as ¥70 (about USD 10) or more off the final total.

Are Singles Day discounts real or fake?

Both. Genuine cuts sit alongside items whose price was raised beforehand and then "discounted" back to normal. Check an item's price history with a tracker such as 慢慢买 before you buy; if the sale price is not actually lower than the past few months, it is not a real deal.

Can I return a Singles Day purchase?

Yes. The standard 7-day no-reason return applies to normal purchases, counted from delivery. Return shipping is free if the order carried return-shipping insurance (运费险) and otherwise comes out of your pocket. Expect delivery and return processing to run slow for a week or two while the whole country ships at once.
